A Car Wash as Metaphor:
"Lather, rinse, repeat as desired." A rite of passage marks a point in time when a momentous adjustment in a life occurs. The rite is an action, sometimes thought of as a sacrament or ceremony that is the genesis of the transitional phase. Three main phases occur: 1. separation, 2. transition, and 3. incorporation. In the separation phase, the familiar is removed. The transition phase is the moment of alteration. The incorporation phase is that of assimilation into the new routine, the new life after the rite.
